Mictlantecuhtli, also known as the Presser of Destruction, is a bat demon that Bayonetta can summon in Bayonetta 2 and can use as a Demon Slave in Bayonetta 3. Though not able to be summoned on its own as a Climax Attack, it mostly appears during Umbran Climax when using Love Is BlueRakshasa, Chernobog, and/or Shuraba.

Book of Infernal Demons[]

Bayonetta 2[]

A gigantic bat that lurks in one of the darkest and deepest of Inferno's endless caves. It is said to leave trails of the plague wherever it goes.

The protrusion on its head is not an eye, but a spiritual sensory organ that can allow Mictlantecuhtli to access the world in far deeper ways than beings who must only rely on sight alone.

Bayonetta 3[]

A gigantic, bat-like Infernal Demon that lurks in one of the darkest and deepest of Inferno's endless caves.

Although Mictlantecuhtli looks like one Infernal Demon with four wings, it is actually a pair of brothers merged together and acting as one, with the red-bodied older brother on top, and the blue-bodied younger brother on the bottom.

With their light body, they fly swiftly and attack enemies by firing bursts of magic energy.

They can also change formation to align horizontally, which allows them to emit waves of spiritual energy like sonar, using it to detect things like invisible objects and those hiding between dimensions.

Among humans, the appearance of Mictlantecuhtli is said to herald the coming of terrible plagues.

Story[]

Bayonetta 2[]

As mentioned previously, Mictlantecuhtli appears only in specific gameplay circumstances. It is seen most often when using Umbran Climax with its 3 signature weapons when it slams down or sweeps its wings across the battlefield in devastating area of effect attacks.

Mictlantecuhtli is also summoned as Greed's Torture Attack. Bayonetta summons the demon on top of Greed before Michtlantecuhtli spins around with a tornado-like force and presses its foe into the ground (reflecting its alternate title). Greed's body eventually gives way and is easily crushed into oblivion.

Appearance[]

Resembling a gigantic bat, Mictlantecuhtli lacks any proper limbs along its thin body and instead has 2 sets of wings, one smaller than the other. It possesses multiple eyes, including its special perception organ, sharp teeth similar to Scolopendra and a membrane resembling its wings wrapped around its head which is adorned with a pair of sharp horns. Its body is also covered in smaller spikes down its entire length.

It is revealed that Mictlantecuhtli is in fact two demons in Bayonetta 3, comprised of two demon brothers. The red top half is the older brother, while the bottom blue half is the younger brother. They however have perfect synergy and fight as one.

Abilities[]

As a bat-like demon, Mictlantecuhtli has the ability to fly using its wings, these wings act as deadly weapons due to their sharpness. This demon has the ability to shriek so loud that it can destroy all those in its way. It can also perform spin attacks like a drill, piercing enemies with its horns. In Bayonetta 3, it has the ability to control electricity, being able to shoot lighting, electric pellets, and beams. Mictlantecuhtli's segmented tail can be used as a sharp whip, the segments can also detach as slicing shurikens or as projectile shooters. Mictlantecuhtli can create shields around itself for protection. It can also release a sonar of sorts that reveals invisible entities and illuminates dark areas.

Gameplay[]

Bayonetta 2[]

Mictlantecuhtli is seen as a Torture Attack whilst in Inferno, as well as an Infernal Weave with Love Is BlueRakshasa, Chernobog, and Shuraba.

Bayonetta 3[]

Mictlantecuhtli makes a return in Bayonetta 3, this time as a full on companion thanks to the Demon Slave mechanic. It's also tied to Abracadabra, giving Bayonetta a bat-like form for the linked Demon Masquerade ability.

Mythology[]

Michtlantecuhtli is named after the Aztec god of the dead. The Aztec 'Mictlantecuhtli' is ruler over the lowest underworld, much like how Mictlantecuhtli is found in the deepest parts of Inferno. Bats are among the many animals the god is associated with.

Its form being a bat and being comprised of two brothers is likely based on the Maya Hero Twins, the oldest complete Mayan myth. The two twin brothers were invited to the Mayan underworld, Xibalba, by two of its Lords and challenged to a game. While there, the twins went to the Bat House, a place filled with dangerous shrieking bats. The twins managed to hide inside the blowguns they carried with them to avoid the bats, but when the older twin peaked his head out to see if daylight had come, he was decapitated by the bat god Camazotz.
